At the beginning of the summer, I started working on a college guidebook — not for anyone else, just for my kids and me to use. We’ve been touring schools and taking copious notes everywhere we go, because everything blends together so quickly. I tried looking for college planners or tools to keep us organized, but nothing felt quite right. So, I started drafting one the way I wanted it.

And it… evolved.

I have to say… we’re kind of killing it. So far this summer, we’ve toured 12 colleges. Twelve! Some visits were all three of us together, and others were one-on-one trips with each of my kids — something I’d never done before. Honestly, those one-on-one moments have been the sweetest part of this whole process.

The college search is officially in full swing over here, and let me tell you, it’s a marathon. I have two seniors — yes, two at the same time — and we’re trying to see as many of the schools on their lists as possible before application season is in full gear.

I can’t believe my kids are looking for colleges already. Didn’t I just drop them off at Pre-K yesterday? I swear I still remember labeling every tiny backpack and packing their first little lunches. Now suddenly, I’m staring at glossy college brochures and financial aid charts, and it feels like I blinked and arrived here overnight.

This feels a little nerve-wracking to share, but here goes. I’ve been quietly working on a creative project for the past several months — something that started as a “just for fun” experiment and turned into a little obsession. I’ve been making notebooks. Lots of them.

It’s not easy being a lone paycheck earning mom of teens, especially with both retirement and college expenses looming. I know I am not alone.
